Madrid’s Teatro Real deploys UV light as part of COVID-19 response

The Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain, is using GoldenSea UV Ultraviolet-C disinfection products as part of a raft of measures to protect the health and well-being of audiences, artists and employees. A complement to traditional cleaning, the solution is designed to ensure 99.9% virus inactivation.

From the moment it reopened its doors, the Teatro Real has adopted all the mandatory and recommended health measures specified by the Community of Madrid: limiting audience capacity; using hydro-alcoholic gel for cleaning hands; and requiring the mandatory use of masks during the entirety of performances. In addition, the theatre has taken the initiative to reinforce its disinfection protocols with ultraviolet-C light technology, applying it across many areas within the theatre.

In doing so the Teatro Real collaborated with Stonex, which advised on the best ways to disinfect different areas. The solution includes four GoldenSea UV UVL150 units within the stage and auditorium areas, and two mobile GSUV UVM216 units for backstage and rehearsal rooms.

The UVL150 device is designed for both fixed installations and mobile use when supported on a flat surface. It reaches 160m² (1,722ft²) in 120 minutes. The UVM216 model is ideal for use in spaces from 60-240m² (646-2,583ft²). It is slightly taller than the UVL150, and supported on wheels to facilitate easy movement from one area to another.

The GSUV UVM216

All GSUV products have been designed with built-in security measures to guarantee compliance with the UNE 0068 specification and safe handling: delayed start to allow the evacuation of the area to be disinfected; remote control; a motion sensor that switches off the device when it detects movement of a person or animal; drop sensor (in mobile units); red or green indicator lights; and an audio warning signal.

Stonex worked closely with the Teatro Real in supporting and supplying the UVC equipment for this project from its partner Goldensea UV, a specialist in professional lighting production. Goldensea UVC devices are developed from quartz glass tubes that allow full transmission of ultraviolet light in the spaces to be disinfected. It is an ozone-free technology that leaves no residues.

Stonex notes scientific research has endorsed that UVC disinfection products do not present a health risk as long as they are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and as a complementary measure to traditional cleaning.
